Grammar Games

You may practice any of the following on the Grammar Monster website. :)

http://www.grammar-monster.com/

I would recommend "apostrophes", "there, their, they're", and "to" vs. "too". It seems many people need practice with these items.

The Jackson 5 - ABC

A Ironic Song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFfCKy0nKr0

This is ironic because he gets fame and fortune, but he is still worried about winning. Also he payed his dues for being in jail and his sentence was up ,but he had never committed no crime.

In which a boy tells a girl that he loves her 12 times, all the while assuring her 23 times that he is going to tell her this just 1 time.

Me plus you, I'ma tell you one timeMe plus you, I'ma tell you one timeMe plus you, I'ma tell you one timeOne time, one time

Surfin USA.

If everybody had an ocean
Across the U. S. A.
Then everybody'd be surfin'
Like Californi-a
You'd seem 'em wearing their baggies
Huarache sandals too
A bushy bushy blonde hairdo
Surfin' U. S. A.

You'd catch 'em surfin' at Del Mar
Ventura County line
Santa Cruz and Trestle
Australia's Narrabeen
All over Manhattan
And down Doheny Way

Everybody's gone surfin'
Surfin' U.S.A.

We'll all be planning that route
We're gonna take real soon
We're waxing down our surfboards
We can't wait for June
We'll all be gone for the summer
We're on surfari to stay
Tell the teacher we're surfin'
Surfin' U. S. A.

Haggerties and Swamies
Pacific Palisades
San Onofre and Sunset
Redondo Beach L. A.
All over La Jolla
At Wa'imea Bay.

Everybody's gone surfin'

Everybody's gone surfin'

Ironic Song

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v9yUVgrmPY
"Ironic"

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

Nicole T. Cousins

Since I am the only child in my family, my cousins: Hannah, Nathan, and Stephan who live in North Liberty are extremely important to me. In fact, the bond we share is more like a brother sister relationship, versus a cousin. Whether it's swimming, playing basketball, making home movies,  going to Adventureland, or just hanging out and goofing around we always have a good time. Together we have created many memories that will last a lifetime. I know whether I'm 14, 44, or 84, they'll be there to support me. With my phone, I know I'm only a text or only a call away.

I  admire my dad because he is the one who helps me mostly with my sports and teaches me what to do and what not to do in them. He also helps me in my homework because he is really smart and has a lot of ability in math. I don't really get to see him much right now because he is building our new house out  in Washington district. He loves to many things and can do many things. He loves to the things that i love to do such as biking and fishing and camping. But we consider camping in our grandparents cabins. My dad loves me as I do him and all of this that I am writing it is nothing against my mom and I  love her to so that is a little bit about my dad and I.

Nikole C. My Big Brother

He is my brother.
His name is Catin Xavier.
He is twenty-three and stationed across seas.
I miss him , and he misses me.

We Skype each other almost every week.
His daughters and baby son join me.
We pray for his safety every night.
His wife and I always send him letters and care-packages,
I don't think he minds .

I have no idea where he is stationed now.
He is miles away.
But no matter what he will always be my big brother.
This is my brother Catin.

McKenna H. My Sister

My sister means more to me then she realizes. She gives me advice and helps me have fun. I think it's funny how sometimes I help her with her homework, and she helps me with mine. I love to go shopping with her, so she can help me find things I will like. She supports me in sports, school, and and decisions I need to make. She is lovable, fun, smart, and hardworking. I never feel I cant tell her something that I need to tell someone. I hope one day I can have a good job and go to school like her. I get a lot of my character from her. I think thats why we are so close and have so much in common.

Alexis V. My brother

My brother

He may be older than me
But we act the same age.
We share the same birthday
But not the same age.

We are full of laughs when we are together

Amery B.--My grandpa & my sister

When I was eight my grandpa died from cancer. He was sixty. He had been fighting cancer for a while and he seemed to get better but then his condition dropped and it was terrible. I remember going to the hospital to visit him and barely recognizing him. He was so skinny and just didn't look like my grandpa.  I miss him so much. Although he was quiet, I would give anything to hear him speak again. After he had died my mom called their phone and heard my grandpa talking on the voicemail and she said her heart stopped. She started crying. The voicemail is still set to him talking. When my grandpa died my mom had just been talking to my grandma not long before. After my mom hung up my grandma called crying and just said he had died. My mom started crying, too. My grandpa's last words to my grandma were, "I love you Kay," and then he died.  My mom came to talk to us and after we found out the whole house way crying for days. My mom wrote the poem for his funeral and we still have it framed in the hallway, with a thing of wheat and a picture of him. It was hard for anyone to believe he had died. Now we always put potato chips on our hamburgers because that is what my grandpa did. Potato chips were his all time favorite.

I also have another sister who died when she as three months old. I never got to see her. My parents were on their way to surprise my grandma and a semi hit them. My sisters brain shook too hard and my sister, Rylea, died. The worst part was my dad was in a coma when she died so he woke up wondering where Rylea was. My mom had to explain to him what happened.

My mom

She is my mom
I am her daughter
She is old
I am young
She is tall
I am short
I am smart
She is smarter
I am funny
She is hilarious
She cooks
She cleans
She lets me hangout with my friends
She takes me places
She takes me to the football games
She is nice
She is not strict
She is understanding
She helps me with my homework
And she helps me with my problems

Brendan K Dad

Dad is the one who does archery with me.
We also shoot clay pigeons. And Fish together.
And play games.
We also camp together.
We have both been in scouts and I still am.

He got me to play sports.
He helps me play baseball.
And he helps me with shooting hunting and archery.

Hayden W. My Grandpa

My Grandpa is so awesome. He always helps me out with everything. We always make the best of every situation, even when it didn't work out the way we wanted it to. When I was younger I would always look forward to going over to my Grandpa's house. I think the most fun thing we do is go fishing. We have always done it almost every time we get together. Another thing we do is go to the lake up in Wisconsin. I hardly ever get to go up there but whenever I do, I always have a blast. You come to all of my football and baseball games. You always say I do a great job, even when I don't do that well. You are truly the best grandpa a kid can have.

                                                                                                  -Hayden W.

Jasmine *warning, personal

If  I had one last wish it would be to see you for one last time.   I miss you and it's just not the same with out you. Every time I see your picture and I wonder what it would be like if you were still here.  Would it be the same.?  We will never know. Grandpa everyone has been fighting a lot and not being acting the same even though you died over two years ago on march 3 , 2010. I remember the day like it was yesterday. I wish I could give  you one last hug ,and one last  kiss .  The day I left on sunday, I had a feeling that something bad would happen when I left and  something did, you had died. The nurse toke him off of his medicine that was keeping him alive. When she told them that he might die on that day they were prepared for that day, they didn't want it to happen but god was calling him and they had no last words. They checked up on him like every hour. People where sleeping upstairs to make she he was okay but , than my aunt had woke up to outside, but before she went outside  she wanted to see if he was awake ,but he wasn't.  I was at my dads in Waterloo and I went to ask my dad "why wasn't I going to school and he said we have bad news and i knew something was wrong because my brother Jordan never cry and he was in tears when he had told me. So , I was like whats happened and he said grandpa had passed away this morning and said no no no no why? why? why? . I knew he wasn't going to make it over the night. I wish he didn't have to go. Him and my grandma had always motivated me and told me it would be okay when I was down. I broke down in tears and I didn't know what to do I just went back in my room and cry and wondering why today ?. And we just broke down in tears and we didn't go to school that day. we went down to cedar rapids to see my family to make sure they were okay. And I will never forget that day. . R.I.P. Grandpa Yirkovsky.:( I love and miss you. and one day i will be able to see you day  . Love you <3 Everyone misses and loves you. and always will and you will always be remembered.

                          -Jasmine S

jake D. younger brother

I choose my youngest brother Cole. he is 3 but very fast, strong, and short. when we go outside we can do anything. we could go outside and play football or play any other sport. he enjoys to play soccer, teeball, football, and any other game you could think of. we also could play at the park. we like to play tag or hide and seek. or we just enjoy to swing. that is what me and cole like to do outside.
When we are inside, thats where most of the fun happens. Cole enjoys playing with his matchbox cars. Sometimes I also like to play with the cars sometimes because its fun to just be a little kid again. We play with cars for sometimes for hours. But the thing he likes most is his trains. He has to line up all of his trains every time before he uses them. Its weird but thats my brother. Also, he likes to play with my other brother Ryan's nerf guns. He like to come up and shoot us. The good thing is, that he is ok if we shoot him as well. So,that is very fun.

I have a different dad from her.
Her name is Jenny.
My name is Grace.
She lives cedar Rapids with my cousin ,and her tiny cat Layla.
But I live with my dad and my cat Stanley.
She took me paddle boating with my two cousins.
It was my first time paddle boating.
She had to help me get my life jacket on and, help me get back on the boat.
I couldn't even get on the boat by myself.
She jumped off the rock first.
I jumped off last after her and my two cousins hanna hand jessica.
She was the one who told Jessica that if we didn't jump we have to pay for a extra hour.
I was the one who jumped last and wanted to do it again.
She is my older sister.
i am her baby sister.

Tylor F. my dad

My dad was the one who got me into sports. He helped me play my sports. He taught me what he could and to his limits and thats what I think of the most. He helped me swing my bat and helped me put on my pads. He helped me figure out my problems that I had. He has been my teacher so far, and that is what I appreciate the most.

He helps me with my homework when I can't figure it out. He is outstanding and is always helping out.
Even thou he is rarely home to help out. He is an amazing dad. He teaches me everything I know. He is constantly trying to make me better than he was in school. He the one I look up to the most. He is the best one of all.

Katie T. My Mother.

My Mother.

She is old,
I am young.
She is proud of me,
and I am proud of her.
She likes the books,
I'd rather wait for the movie.
She likes solitare,
I'd prefer Go Fish.
She is old fashioned,
I am modern.

I am strong,
but she is stronger.
I am smart,
but she is smarter.
I am creative,
but she's more practical.
She is mother,
and I am daughter.

Sometimes we fight sometimes we brawl,
but I love her and she loves me,
my mom and I are family.

Mitchell W. My Dad

He lives in Iowa
I live in Iowa
He is old
I am young
He is lonely
I am not lonely

He is the one who put the worm on my fishing pole
I am the one who threw the line into the water
He is the one who helped me bring in my fish
I am the one who thought it was a great blue whale
When in reality it was a five inch sunfish

He is the one I love
He is the one I always will
He is my great dad
I am his great son

Isabella S. my mom!

A person that is special to me is my mom. My mom is always there for me when I am sick, and when I just need someone to talk too! Even though my mom and I fight she is still always there for me if I need someone to talk to, and if I just need a laugh. I wouldn't say that my mom and I are super close like some other people are with their mom. I am pretty sure I would be lost without my mom! I don't know what I would do without her.
My mom and I do have our ups and downs, but I am a teenagers so sometimes I just get into those moods where I just don't want to talk to anyone. My mom would and will also try to do something to make me feel better! My mom will always be there for me even when everyone else shuts me out! I am very thankful to have a mom like my mom, and even just have a mom for that matter! I know that some people are not as lucky to have a mom like my mom. Even though my mom is kinda of weird, and goofy sometimes she is still my mom!

Hunter K. my mom

I have chosen my mom she is strict and pushes me to do my best. She helps me with homework when my dad is not available.  She watches me play sports and hit the ball around with friends in our backyard. My mom always reminds me to do my chores. She tells me to get my homework done. She wakes me up in the morning. She takes my sister and I to and from all our activities. My mom is always there for me when I'm sick.  My mom is there to buy things when I need them.

Brayden S. My Step Dad.

My step-father is like my real dad. Ever since I can remember he has been around teaching me what I need to be successful in life. He was the one to teach me how to play and commit myself to a sport. He is very smart and knows a lot about math and science. He helps me with my math homework because I am bad at math.
We like to play xbox together on occasions. I have met his family and he has met mine.  He is funny and is knows how to make people laugh. He has a great sense of humor and is good at solving riddles. That is a little bit about my step-father.

Brandon m dad

My dad is tall and so am I. my dad was athletic and so am I. my dad means a lot to me because he has taught me a lot about some of my sports. he helps me with my math. he was a very smart kid.me on the other hand am not very smart in math. my dad likes to do many things that i like to do. things we like to do is bike, shoot hoops, and play the PS3 in our living room. my dad and I  love to watch action and horror movies together. now i don't really get to see him because he is always working out my new house building, and working at his real job.

So that is a little bit about me and my dad. Usually me and him on a nice day when i do see  him if he gets home early and me and my sister are in the front yard. As soon as his truck pulls in he comes out and takes the football away from me and says ''Go deep''! and he throws a few passes to me and goes inside and I am thankful for that because i don't ever see my dad. so that is a little bit about dad and me.

Alex S. and Grandma and Grandpa

If I were given one last wish,
it would be for you Grandma and Grandpa,

For one picture with you,
one last hug from you,
one last glimpse of you.

If my wish came true, I could have you,
cheering at my football games,
applauding loudly at my baseball games,
holding my sisters hands when they get scared by me,
and showing me how to do things how you would do them.

But most importantly I'd want,
if my wish came true,
a final hug,
a warm welcome,
a group hug,
and one last smile to see on your faces.

Trey C. My Dad.

My Dad

He lives in Iowa
I live in Iowa
He is loud

My mom is a very important person in my life. She has always been there for me. My mom is one of the nicest people i know. She is always happy and she is rarely mean. My mom is a people-person that is why she is a teacher. My mom is great at teaching. She is also very smart. She is one of the smartest people i know. Some of the ways my mom is nice is that she always cleans my room and does my laundry. My mom is always willing to help me with my homework or any questions that have to do with school. My mom is not strict at all as long as i listen to what she says.

Student notes.......

V- I can see the man paralyzed from watching the dog go out the window.

I - George feels bad for what he did.

P- Since the dog jumped out the window, it probably died.

E- I feel like the man is selfish because he killed someone's dog and all he cares about is getting to his interview.

P- If the guy tells the professor what he did, the professor might think that he is crazy.

V- "I" can imagine the people in the elevator.

V- "I" visualize George's hand sweating and his heart racing.

MU - How would the professor react if he saw his dog?

J- I figured George was spacing out because he feels responsible for the dog's death.

V- I can picture him reading the elevator dial.

V- I can see the professor being both sad and mad at George.

V- I can picture the professor being confused ... kind of in a daze.. while George is freaking out inside.

P- I think the dog isn't dead because the professor would be freaking out a bit more.

P- I think the dog might have knocked him down somehow.

P- I think the dog is still alive.

C- I was glad the dog didn't die.

V- I can see that George is shocked and the professor smiling.

"Fetch" teacher notes......

V- I'm picturing that giant dog... basically attacking the man.

C- I'm connecting to the text because I am imagining my dog (that's big) doing the same thing that this dog is doing.

P- I feel like something bad is going to happen because it says "an idea" came to him. This man is irritated by this dog -- so he wants to get the dog out of the way.

E- because I feel kinda bad for the man.. here is ready for an interview, and he has dog slime on his "best pants"

V- I can picture that giant dog in midair flying out the window.

J- I think that this man is kind of a jerk because he purposefully sent the dog out the window (probably that dog died?)

Playing with Words........

The deputy told me to empty my pockets: two quarters, a penny, a stick of bubble gum, and a roll of grip tape for my skateboard.

Questions: What do you notice?
What makes you think that?
What else can you see?

The sun comes out and you look around at all the changes the storm has caused: the outside chairs blown away, the Joshua trees plumped with water, the ground still a little wet.

Questions: What do you notice? ....What else?
How does it sound when we read it?
What would change if we removed this or that? ... Which do you prefer? Why?

Jumping in front of the frozen TV picture, like it's a magic wand, he waves the remote in circles.

Questions: What do you see? What did the author create?

His face turned the color of an avocado. He stood motionless, like he was nailed to the floor.

Questions: What particular words affect your senses (sight, touch, smell, hear, feel) What would happen if we changed this sentence and just said his face turned green? Which do you like better? What is strong writing verses weak writing?
