Playing with Words........

The deputy told me to empty my pockets: two quarters, a penny, a stick of bubble gum, and a roll of grip tape for my skateboard.

Questions: What do you notice?
What makes you think that?
What else can you see?

The sun comes out and you look around at all the changes the storm has caused: the outside chairs blown away, the Joshua trees plumped with water, the ground still a little wet.

Questions: What do you notice? ....What else?
How does it sound when we read it?
What would change if we removed this or that? ... Which do you prefer? Why?

Jumping in front of the frozen TV picture, like it's a magic wand, he waves the remote in circles.

Questions: What do you see? What did the author create?

His face turned the color of an avocado. He stood motionless, like he was nailed to the floor.

Questions: What particular words affect your senses (sight, touch, smell, hear, feel) What would happen if we changed this sentence and just said his face turned green? Which do you like better? What is strong writing verses weak writing?

Response to Questionnaire

We had a lot of great questions from the questionnaire that you completed. I thought I'd answer some of  them here on our blog.

1) Why do you want to teach Language Arts?

Ans: I love teaching Language Arts! Reading and writing are my absolute favorite things to do. I knew when I was in grade school that I wanted to do something that pertained to reading. When I was in 5th grade I got to meet the author, Carolyn Keene, of the Nancy Drew series. I loved reading Nancy Drew novels; I read 120 of them when I was in elementary school! I also wanted to become an English teacher because of my grandpa. He inspired me to read and share with him what I read. He would pay me $1 for every book I read. I would use that money to go to the gas station down the street and buy snacks.

2) Do you have a favorite grade to teach?

Yes. I love teaching 8th and 9th graders. I love teaching students this age because, in my experience, you guys like to be silly, have fun, and learn new things.

3) How old are you?

Ans: How old do you think I am? ;)

4) Are we going to do speeches in here?

Ans: We will do a few, but you won't be overwhelmed with speech assignments.

5) What is your favorite book? Have you read _The Hunger Games_?

Ans: My favorite book is _The Great Gatsby_ though I have many favorites. And, yes, I read _The Hunger Games_. I thought it was pretty good. The movie is great too!

6) What is your favorite color?

Ans: My favorite color is green.

7) What toothpaste do I use? Hahahaha!

Ans: Crest

8) What do you like most about teaching?

Ans: Discussions with students about what they are reading.  I love sharing insights, asking questions, and making comments about wonderful works of art.
